Live a wonderful and happy life

Looking through many of the best-selling magazines today, I saw "How to live happily", "Make yourself successful", "Finding true love in the virtual world", "Please join the heart club", "Secrets to solving difficulties", "Success in the workplace" Articles abound, such as "A must-have for professionals" and "Plan for retirement in advance". It is conceivable that peace, happiness, love, and success are the life goals pursued by the majority of people.

Most Chinese people know how to invest financially to prepare for the future. No matter how little they earn, they still have to save a little. Because of this industrious and frugal national character, as long as we work hard and have a little chance, most of us can pursue a successful life without worrying about food and clothing. However, when life reaches a point, no matter whether you think you are successful or not, have you ever woken up from a dream at midnight and asked yourself what is the purpose of your life? What are you living for? When we invest money, have we ever thought about investing in life?

According to my observation, there are roughly two types of people's attitude towards their own lives: one is the consumer type, who spends his life looking for all kinds of fun and satisfying his various desires, no matter what. Desire is fame, profit, love, happiness, and power. Such people may live a colorful life for themselves, but when life comes to an end, everything will disappear without a trace. The other type is the contributor. He develops and invests the talents, gifts, abilities and limited life given by God. He generously spends his life and everything for others, and ultimately benefits the people around him. Have a long-lasting impact on life. Because of such selfless investment, life can be passed on, never to be the same again, and even leave a legend behind.

In 1865, in Yongning, Jinjiang, Fujian, Gao Chang, a 28-year-old young farmer, crossed the sea from his hometown to Taiwan in order to find opportunities and create his own bright future. Like many homeless people at that time, he had no formal education and was illiterate. Like all living beings at that time, he was poor and depressed, had a bad habit of gambling, and was at a loss as to what to do when facing the uncertain future. One day, he was on his way to the temple to ask for blessings from Bodhisattva to win money from gambling...

In 1863, James Laidlaw Maxwell, a 27-year-old surgeon in Attenborough, Scotland, who had received the most advanced and rigorous medical training at the time in England, Germany and France, felt that God was calling him. When he arrived in China, he took immediate action and set sail from Britain, which was the most technologically advanced country in the world at that time. After nearly eight months of sailing, he arrived in Xiamen, Fujian Province in 1864. After learning Hokkien for a year, in 1865, at the age of 29, he arrived in Tainan, Taiwan, which was riddled with diseases, had no modern medicine at all, and was unfamiliar and backward...

On this day, Gao Chang, who was wandering in the temple market, met James Ma from Scotland and heard good news about God's salvation of mankind. Gao Chang made a very important decision - he decided to believe in this God. The two young men became friends, and Gao Chang did cleaning and cooking work for Ma Yagou. Ma Yagou taught Gao Chang how to read the Bible and sing hymns while treating patients. A year later, when God's call came to Gao Chang, Gao Chang made another important decision. He wanted to go out and share the good news of life with others.

Because of his illness, James left Taiwan and returned to Scotland seven years later. But he laid a very important foundation for modern medicine in Taiwan. He created the Roman alphabet system, which gave people who did not know Chinese characters a tool for written communication. His translation of the New Testament in Roman alphabet helped countless believers understand the word of God. His two sons succeeded him and practiced medicine and preached in Taiwan and China throughout their lives.

Ever since Gao Chang met Dr. Jacob Ma and heard the good news, his life has been completely different. He is still like a wanderer, but this time he travels with an important mission - to share the good news of life with others. He led countless people to believe in the Lord throughout his life, and people called him the Chariot of Fire. Of his five sons, two were pastors and three were doctors. Among his three sons-in-law, there are two doctors and a priest. His descendants, in addition to countless doctors and priests, have been greatly blessed in all walks of life.

James Ma responded to the call. His life investment not only took him through an extraordinary adventure, but his life also inspired many medical missionaries to follow his example and serve God among the Chinese people. Thousands of people have also followed his example. He enjoyed a blessed life.

Gao Chang is my great-grandfather. He died half a century before I was born (1912), but his life still shocks and inspires me to this day. His decision forever changed the history of his family and brought eternal blessing to his descendants.

Both men had the courage to invest everything God had entrusted to them, whether it was life, talents, opportunities, abilities, or money. As a result, really, they lived their lives wonderfully and happily, and left behind a legend of life.
