Through a small act of obedience, God allowed me to see the fruit of His Kingdom—Grandpa came to faith!

Come Stay with Us!

Grandpa—my husband’s grandfather and our children’s great-grandfather—had been living in a nursing home with Grandma. After Grandma suddenly passed away from cancer, Grandpa was devastated with grief. My mother-in-law, as their daughter, was heartbroken as well. Seeing the two of them at the funeral, Grandpa wept constantly and seemed to have lost even the strength to walk.

My heart was filled with compassion for him, and I felt a strong urgency to help. I knew that God wanted me to bring him into our home.

From a practical standpoint, our family was already in a position to help. We had a caregiver who could assist with his daily needs. I had recently left my job and was at home full-time caring for our children, so I had the capacity to look after him as well. We also had a spare guest room available.

I believed that our two school-aged children could help lift his spirits and bring some joy into his life. Surrounded by the energy, warmth, and activity of a lively household, perhaps he would be able to regain his strength and sense of purpose.

What’s more, I had been praying for more than ten years for Grandpa to receive the gospel. If we brought him into our home, there would surely be more opportunities to share the gospel with him and take him to church.

The idea flashed through my mind like a revelation from heaven. Many of the clear leadings I had received from God in the past had come in much the same way. So I shared the idea with the whole family.

To my surprise, everyone immediately welcomed it. They agreed to let Grandpa come and stay with us for a month.

During Grandpa’s stay with us, my husband and I took him to Sunday worship services, Friday small-group gatherings, barbecues, shopping centers, parks, and even school outings with the children. We tried to include him in as many activities as possible, including family vacations, even though it was often challenging. He could not walk very far, so I pushed him in a wheelchair.

During this time, he had the opportunity to interact with many more people, and his spirits gradually lifted. He became noticeably more relaxed and cheerful. He told us that the people at church were the warmest people he had ever met in his life.

Eat All You Can！

Whenever Grandpa wanted a particular medication or health supplement, I would immediately order it online for him. He would often exclaim, “Wow, that was fast!” Whenever he remarked that something was too expensive, I would assure him that it was inexpensive—or even free.

He loved sardines, but he would only eat a few bites at a time so that the children could have more. When I noticed this, I told him that a can cost only a dollar and that he could eat as much as he wanted. I would deliberately open three cans at once (which was honestly a bit excessive) so that he could enjoy them without holding back.

His favorite place to sit was a comfortable reclining chair, so I placed one in the living room where he could be with the family, and another in his bedroom so that he would always have one available whenever he wanted to sit and rest.

I noticed that he had difficulty reaching the showerhead, so I lowered it for him. I also bought a foldable shower stool for him to sit on and installed grab bars on the bathroom wall for added support.

Throughout the house, I placed nightlights in various locations so that he could see clearly when getting up during the night, without the lights being so bright that they would disturb his sleep. I also bought him a urinal with a glow-in-the-dark lid, allowing him to use it at night without having to make frequent trips to the bathroom.

His main problem was constipation. I made sure that every meal included two kinds of vegetables so that he would get plenty of natural fiber. When he first came to stay with us, he hardly drank any water because he was worried about having to use the bathroom too often. Naturally, without enough water, his bowel movements became difficult.

I bought him a thermos so that drinking water would be more convenient. He also began taking a new medication that helped reduce frequent urination. With adequate water and fiber, his constipation problem was resolved.

In addition to caring for Grandpa’s physical health, I also tried to provide emotional support. While Grandma was still alive, I once overheard a conversation between them. In a quiet voice, Grandpa whispered to her in Sichuanese, “No one cares about us; we are all alone.” It broke my heart. He did not realize that I could understand what he was saying.

So while he was staying with us, I spent a great deal of time talking with him so that he would not feel sad or lonely. He often insisted that there was no need to give him anything because he was already so old and that all resources should be saved for the children. I told him that regardless of age, every person has equal value before God, because we are all created in His image.

A few weeks before my mother-in-law came to pick him up, I began taking Grandpa to a Christian sister’s traditional Chinese medicine clinic for acupuncture treatments. She treated him with great kindness, validated his feelings, and spoke many words of encouragement to him. She continually reassured him that the treatments would be very beneficial.

When my mother-in-law arrived and tried to persuade Grandpa to return home with her, he refused. He said that he preferred living with us. That made me very happy, because I had also greatly enjoyed the opportunity to share God’s love with him.

Lilia's POV ---- ——

There is a saying: “When there is an elder in the home, there is a treasure in the home.” Having Grandpa live with us was a tremendous blessing to our family. Not only did he allow us to enjoy the precious blessing of family togetherness, but because of him, we also received much attention in the church. Many people were touched and commented on our filial devotion, and the church consequently entrusted us with certain ministries. I believe they saw that it was God's grace that led us to welcome Grandpa into our home.

After leaving the workplace, God led me to a more important work. Whether in ministry organizations or at home, I have devoted myself to serving God and serving people. I now have an unprecedentedly greater purpose and a broader field of service.

“When there is an elder in the home, there is a treasure in the home.” The author welcomed Grandpa to live with the family and included him in all their family activities. Surrounded by a lively and joyful environment, Grandpa became much more cheerful.

Grandma came to faith!

I shared many stories of faith with Grandpa. I told him how I had left the legal profession to follow God's calling for me in Christian media ministry. I also told him how God had spoken to my heart, teaching me the true meaning of marriage and bringing my life together with that of his grandson.

I explained to him that, for me, marriage is a school where I learn to love another person, and through that, learn to love God.

I told him that I strive to put God first in every area of my life. I also told him that the results are never good when I disobey God, yet God still restores my life.

I told him about my relationship with the living God. I explained that the “Shangdi” spoken of in Chinese culture is the Most High God—a name that sounds remarkably similar to El Shaddai, God Almighty. Grandpa listened attentively with an open heart and never spoke negatively about what I shared.

At times he was surprised by what I told him; at other times he was deeply moved. I could truly see the impact of the gospel on his life, and he became increasingly open to matters of faith.

After marrying my husband, I began praying for Grandpa and Grandma, because I was also concerned about the salvation of my own family members, including my parents and relatives. But the Lord Jesus brought to my mind the oldest people I knew—Grandpa and Grandma. I was concerned about their eternal destiny, and I longed to see them come to salvation before they passed away.

Thankfully, Grandma accepted Jesus before she passed away. A year before her death, when we did not yet know that she had cancer, I took my young daughter to visit both of them. Before we even went into the house, my daughter and I prayed in the car for Grandma's salvation.

To our surprise, when we asked her whether she wanted to know Jesus, she answered with a definite “yes.” I shared the gospel with her—that God loves us so deeply that He sent His Son to die for us and bear the punishment we deserve. Jesus died for us, and when we repent and place our faith in Him, we can be saved, receive new life, and have eternal life.

I then showed her The Jesus Film dubbed in her native language. Amazingly, I was able to find a Sichuan dialect version—how remarkable is that! After she finished watching it, I invited her to pray, and she did. She prayed together with my daughter and me, and afterward we could clearly see a change in her life.

I firmly believe that she was saved that day. Later, when I asked Grandpa about it, he said that Grandma had become a believer. When I asked how he knew, he replied that she passed away very peacefully.

Amen.

Lilia's POV ——

Becoming a missionary does not require traveling far; sharing the gospel does not require attending seminary; and preaching does not require a pulpit. What is required is simply faith and obedience.

The Book of Acts says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” God told me to strengthen my faith first, and that in time there would be opportunities to lead my family to Him.

I learned not to be anxious or worried about family members who have not yet come to faith, but instead to strengthen my own faith first. Once we lay aside worldly entanglements, God will prepare our words and actions, enabling us to become His messengers to those we love.

Grandma Also Came to Faith!

I longed to share the gospel with Grandpa and prayed for him earnestly over the years. My relationship with my husband, and later our marriage, did not receive my in-laws’ blessing at first. The Holy Spirit led me to love them, pray for them, and share my life and faith with them. For more than ten years, Grandpa watched my efforts, though he did not fully understand them.

That summer, while Grandpa was living with us, I began reading Fasting by Jentezen Franklin. In the book, he writes that he has been fasting since the age of seventeen, spending about forty days each year in fasting. He describes different types of fasting and the miracles that accompanied them.

What moved me most was his testimony that many of his family members came to faith during periods of fasting. Sometimes even relatives with whom he had not been in contact for years would suddenly call to say that they had accepted Jesus.

He emphasized Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6 concerning giving, prayer, and fasting. When all three are practiced, he said, they can produce abundant fruit.

This book inspired me to try fasting, even though it felt almost like a matter of life and death to me. I love good food and am, perhaps, a bit of a food snob. In my early years as a Christian, fasting was the last thing I wanted to do. This time, however, I made up my mind with great determination, believing that this sense of urgency came from the Lord.

The author, a lover of good food, surrendered her appetite to the Lord and fasted for three days for the sake of sharing the gospel.

I prayed and fasted for three days. At mealtimes, I drank only a little soup; otherwise, I drank water. Remarkably, the Lord provided the soup. We ordered food from a Chinese restaurant, and the soup unexpectedly came as a complimentary part of the meal package! I knew that the Lord was with me and was caring for me.

During those days, I replaced social media with Bible reading. After my morning devotions, I still ran a mile each day. I cooked meals for my children and for Grandpa, yet did not taste a single bite myself, fearing that I might break the fast. I approached the fast with a deep sense of reverence before God.

During those three days, I grew spiritually and became bolder in speaking to Grandpa. I challenged him by asking why Chinese people are willing to believe in unseen things such as acupuncture, feng shui, and fortune-telling, yet are unwilling to believe in the Lord of the universe who loves us and died for us.

The fast came to an end. On the fourth day, I sensed God telling me that I had been too harsh with Grandpa and that all I needed to do was invite him to receive Jesus. At first, I paid little attention to it.

The next day was Sunday, and I prayed again. The Holy Spirit quietly spoke the same message, and a Chinese invitation prayer began to form in my mind. I knew it was from God.

I immediately got up and walked into Grandpa’s room. I asked him whether he would be willing to pray and receive Jesus, and he said yes!

So I led him in prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I am a sinner. I receive You and invite You into my heart and my life. I am willing to let go of everything and place my trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

At that moment, the burden of sin was lifted from him. He was born again, and his eyes filled with tears. It felt as though the Holy Spirit had come upon us, and grace was falling gently like rain. Grandpa’s face seemed to light up.

We looked at one another in wonder and amazement.

That day happened to be Father’s Day in 2024. At the age of ninety-four, Grandpa finally came to know his true Father and became the spiritual father of the three generations that followed him.

Lilia's POV —

For us Chinese, food is almost like an idol. Much of life revolves around eating. When greeting someone, we often ask, “Have you eaten yet?” Many people earn their living through the food industry. Even churches use fellowship meals as a means of building community.

Yet when we surrender even our appetites to God, He works miracles. It is not enough to place God first only in our careers, relationships, and families. When we also submit our appetites to His lordship, we begin to experience what it truly means to die to self. For “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

My Family Changed!

Two months later, Grandpa joined us at an evangelistic retreat hosted by the Bay Area Chinese Christian Church. After hearing a message about the resurrection, he said, “The speaker convinced me!”

Leading Grandpa to faith felt as though a door to ministry had been opened for me. That same summer, I was invited to lead a youth evangelistic camp. I served as the primary leader and, together with my husband, shared responsibility for delivering five messages.

I had never imagined that I could help lead others to Christ. But now, with God at work within me, performing miracles through me, I also found myself with a growing desire to share the gospel with my own family.

Through WeChat, I began sending devotional reflections to my parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and relatives scattered across the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and mainland China. They were changed by the Word of God.

I once took a course that encouraged participants to pray missionally for three people. At the time, I had only one person in mind—our children’s nanny. I brought her to church and, for two years, translated the English sermons into Chinese for her. Two years later, she came to faith in Christ, renounced her idols, and began helping her children immigrate to the United States, hoping that they too would come to know the Lord.

Because of this experience, I was no longer afraid to share the gospel with Grandpa in Chinese. In everyday conversation, I could usually understand only about twenty to thirty percent of what was being said. Yet whenever the topic turned to Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit, or eternity, my Chinese suddenly became much more fluent.

For the sake of His gospel, God is able to help people quickly gain confidence in a language that was once unfamiliar to them.

Small acts of obedience can produce great fruit. That one moment of leading Grandpa in prayer became a seed. My in-laws and my own parents now relate to me very differently.

Grandpa’s salvation is fruit borne in my life, and my family members want to know what kind of tree could produce such fruit. They now read the devotional reflections I send out each day. Gradually, their attitudes have become softer and warmer, and they have come to trust me more as well.

The devotional reflections I share are primarily about Jesus Christ, who was crucified and died for sinners who rejected Him, yet continued to love them and desires that all people be saved. They are also about God, who loves us so deeply that He gave His one and only Son for our sake.

They speak of the Lord who died and rose again—the source of life whom death could not hold. And now, through faith in Him, we are called children of God, co-heirs with Christ, and priests before Him.

And we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Lilia's POV —–

Every time we give up something the world says we need, we are given an opportunity to let God truly be our God. Every time we die to ourselves, we gain a deeper knowledge of Him.

What we gain through that surrender is far better than what we give up.

That is the most profound lesson I learned through the journey of seeing Grandpa come to faith in Christ.

Lilia Tse graduated from Barnard College and previously worked in the digital media industry, where she founded Adfire Health.
